Teaching and learning science using ICT

The science teacher also try to improve their teaching using ICT by google for youtube. She try to show the educational video so that the pupils can understand better for a certain topic. For example,the teacher use interactive whiteboard to show the life cycle of an animals. She try to show the class how the whole process of the life cycle for an animals.

Teaching and learning maths using ICT

Teaching using ICT for both of these subjects is also effective and more interesting. Teacher can choose appropriate topic and surf websites to give some ideas on how to teach maths or science using ICT. Teacher can also provide games or puzzles for the pupils to learn and play at the same time.

All teachers were encourage to teach maths using ICT especially upper primary pupils as they have already know how to use computer. The government has provide interactive whiteboard, cd rom, projector in order to give support to the teachers in using ICT.

From my observation,the teacher taught the topic on bar graph using cd rom provide by the MOE on the interactive whiteboard and explain it verbally to the pupils. The pupils also have the oppurtunity to do activity on the interactive whiteboard and computer in pairs. The teacher also taught them using excel. Although the pupils learn using ICT but the assessment given were from their workbook itself.

Most of the teacher also surf www.primaryresources.com to look for resources and ideas to improve their teaching. They also use worksheets from www.mathsworksheetwizard.com and www.maths-drills.com for maths.

Science

Teaching science is new for lower primary pupils as they only learn simple science in Pelajaran Am before this. Now, they learn more specifically for each topic. For example, for the topic 'Our body', on the old Pelajaran Am, the pupil only have to label the parts of the body.
But in the new science book they were asked to learn more than that. They also learn the fingers' name, facial expression etc. This can make the pupil to understand more about thierself.

Maths

Teaching maths in English for Lower Primary especially Year One is very challanging as most of the pupils could not understand these 'second language'. In order to make the pupils to understand,teacher needs alot of teaching aids and variety of teaching strategies. This could also make the lesson intesting and fun. Teacher should avoid teaching maths using 'talk and chalk' as maybe only the bright pupils can understand the lesson.

For lower primary,the teacher should provide different teaching aids to teach one topic. For example, instead of using the 10 base block to teach the four operations, the teacher can use beads, straws etc.

While for upper primary, the teacher can provide the pupils with a problem solving tasks so that the pupils can think mathematically and creatively and to get the answer they have to make things to be logic.

Teaching maths and science

Maths and Science are the two main subjects that is taught in English from Year One. The new education system, "SPN21", show the link in teaching both subjects. Both subjects develop creative thinking and asked the pupils to think logically through problem solving and inquiry learning.
